Gin and Gingerbread

The ‘big freeze’ of 1814 brought London to a stand still and turned the Thames River, which had completely frozen over, into a fair ground and market place!

Gin and gingerbread pairing dates back to the 1600s and was enjoyed readily at the Frost Fairs of London until the 19th century.

To ward off the current winter chill, we recommend dunking some exotically spiced Billington’s Gingerbread  into a gin of your choice!

Londoners came out in their droves to enjoy hot food and entertainment such as dancing, swings, skittles, and a full-blown unlicensed casino offering roulette and a wheel of fortune!

Also on reocrd is the sale of Gin and Gingerbread, as seen in this caricature here by George Cruikshank and Thomas Tegg. A tent selling alcohol says: ‘Gin and Gingerbread Sold here wholesale’.
